Poll: Is this the year England U21s end their trophy drought?

It’s been 31 years since England U21s triumphed in the Euro’s but this year with the likes of Harry Kane and Danny Ings leading the line, could Gareth Southgate’s men end that drought?

As the Young Lions prepare to crack on with their opening match against Portugal this evening, we want to know how far they can go.

With just eight nations taking part, just five matches stand between the teams and glory in the Czech Republic.

So without further ado, we want you to vote now in today’s poll which puts to you the question of where England will meet their tournament end.

Group stage elimination – 13/8

The last two renewals have seen England get no further than the Group Stage in this tournament, so it’s going to take an effort to improve that poor form.

Runners-up from two years ago Italy will certainly test them, while Portugal and Sweden are returning after four years out of the competition so could be somewhat of an unknown quantity.

Semi Finals – 2/1

The semi-finals have seen the demise of the English U21 side at more tournaments than any other stage.

In a spell in the late 70s and into the 80s England were ejected in the semis in four of six tournaments – and with a potential meeting with favourites Germany in the last four, that could be added to here.

Beaten finalists – 4/1

2009 looked set to be the year that England broke their duck, even securing a penalty shootout victory en route – surely there’s no better sign that an ultimate triumph is on the cards?

But as so often it is, it was the old foe Germany that put the Lions in their place in the final, handing out a footballing lesson to run out comprehensive winners in the final. With the way the groups are, a similar story could well be on the cards.

Winner – 4/1

Gareth Southgate’s side sit only behind Germany in the market to lift the trophy on June 30, and with the depth of the squad they have at their disposal it is perhaps easy to see why.

The squad of 23 made over 270 Premier League appearances between them last season, so have plenty of experience between them, while their strike trio of Kane, Ings and Berahino netted 46 top-flight goals between them. Could this be their year?
