Forget McIlroy – Darius Vassell tops our idiotic injury poll

Published:

Rory McIlroy’s Open hopes lie in tatters before a ball has even been struck after damaging his tendons during a kick-about but according to our latest poll it is an actual footballer who suffered the weirdest injury.

Former Aston Villa and England Darius Vassel striker is fondly remembered for his overhead kick for the Three Lions against Holland but it is the forward’s methods for dealing with blisters that earned him top spot on our poll.

Fed up with a blood blister on his toe the ex-Villan took a power drill to the painful puss pocket only to earn a nasty infection and 45 per cent of our votes.

Next in the voting was baseball’s Bret Barberie and the Florida Marlins player’s tale bring a tear to your eye – literally!

The Olympic gold medallist was happily digging in to a plate of Nachos Grande, resplendent with all the cheese, guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos you could want.

His decision to put his contact lenses in before a trip to the sink, however, left him with a burning so bad he missed the Marlins’ next game. Years later his stupidity was mentioned again and eared him 25 per cent of the votes on a Ladbrokes News poll.

And completing the top three – in a first for Ladbrokes News polls – is a three-way tie between goalkeepers Dave Beasant and Lionel Letizi and Swiss footballer Paulo Diogo.

Southampton legend Beasant’s ill-advised keepy-uppy session with a bottle of salad cream earned him a severed tendon, Letizi overstretched when reaching for a falling scrabble tile to strain his back and Diogo lost part of his finger when his wedding ring got stuck in a fence while celebrating a goal.

All three will have had their managers red-faced with anger at their entirely avoidable injuries but silly as they are they each earned just 10 per cent of the votes on today’s poll!
