Love Your Club : Chris Higgins – Queen of the South

| 13.07.2015

Queen of the South’s Chris Higgins has been a professional footballer for 14 seasons and last year came within touching distance of the top flight as the Dumfries outfit lost out to Rangers in the promotion play-off quarter-finals.

Ladbrokes News caught up with the 30-year-old to ask him about life at The Doonhammers.

Why do you love Queen of the South?

Over the last few years it’s been a successful club. It’s been a community club and the chairman is basing a lot around community spirit. There are a lot of things going on around the stadium, there’s an arena where there’s a cafe, a hairdressers, a gym and indoor training facilities as well. It’s a well run club and in recent years we are doing well on the pitch as well.

What’s the vibe like in the dressing room?

Ian Russell looks after the music. He usually steals all mine and puts it on the playlist! He sends out the message usually and asks what the boys want on, which is good. As we go out on the pitch I’m focussed on the game and applauding the fans, showing them our appreciation.

Describe the fans and what they mean to the club

The other weekend we were down in the town centre, meeting fans and signing autographs. It’s good that the fans can get involved like that. It’s good that they get to see the new players. It’s always good to see the fans and they ask you about how you’re feeling and if it’s positive stuff coming from them it means we are doing well on the pitch.

Can you name a Queen of the South backroom hero?

There are a few. The physio Ross Goodwin does a lot of stuff with looking after the players. There are also a few in Dumfries. Graeme Dalgleish who helps with the kit is good in the dressing room with the boys and he has a bit of banter. There’s also Kev, our groundsman, he also does a lot with the kit and he’s always looking after the boys, he’s definitely and unsung hero.

What’s the best thing about being a Queen of the South footballer?

Growing up it was always what I wanted to do. I started playing football when I was seven years old. My dad got me into it and I’ve always been a supporter and like most people growing up it’s what I’ve always wanted. It’s been a pleasure and it’s now 14 seasons and hopefully there’s more to come, but it really has been a pleasure.
