Poll: Will Sterling shine or will City be left counting the cost?

| 13.07.2015

Proof if any was needed that in football, if you throw your toys out of your pram hard enough, a big money move will ensue.

That’s one way of looking at Raheem Sterling’s imminent move from Liverpool to Manchester City, as the England man prepares to become the second most expensive British player in history.

Having withdrawn from the Liverpool squad through ‘illness’ and failed to report for training many Reds fans will be rubbing their hands with glee at the fee that Brendan Rodgers and co have received for the former QPR man.

And with Rangers set to net 20 per cent from the sale of the forward, the Loftus Road hierarchy will certainly be pleased with their near-£10m windfall.

Having netted 10 goals in all competitions for the Merseyside outfit in 2014-15, Ladbrokes have priced up the 20-year-old at 5/6 to reach double figures for City in the season ahead, while it is the same price he scores nine or less.

While his potential is clear to see, it is key to note, that while Manuel Pellegrini’s side are forking out a wedge for the player, a regular starting spot will not be a given.

The likes of Stevan Jovetic (£22m – 13 Premier League appearances), Eliaquim Mangala (£31.8m –25 run-outs) and Wilfried Bony (£28M – two starts from a possible 16), have shown that new arrivals are not guaranteed to slot straight into the Citizens’ first XI in their maiden season.

For today’s poll, we are asking you a simple question. Will Raheem Sterling’s time at the Etihad Stadium be a success or will the Sky Blues be left pondering where that £49m went?
