Poll: Just who is Manchester United’s mystery striker target?

Published:

Manchester United may have splashed the cash somewhat in this transfer window already but it is abundantly clear that the Red Devils still lack firepower up front.

The sale of Robin van Persie and the completion of Radamel Falcao’s loan stint leaves the side with just Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and James Wilson as recognised senior strikers.

Manager Louis van Gaal has been coy in press conferences on the matter, though he has more or less stated that the Old Trafford outfit will sign a forward.

But we want your input on just who that may be as the season start gets ever closer.

Here are five candidates for a move to the Theatre of Dreams…

Edinson Cavani

The PSG man is 11/8 to end up at Manchester United after the conclusion of the transfer window, the shortest price for any striker in Ladbrokes’ special markets.

His agent has claimed that he is ready to snub United to commit his future to PSG, but could that just be talk to ramp up any interest and subsequent wages?

Karim Benzema

Arsenal look to be in the driving seat to prise Benzema away from Real Madrid, but oh how Manchester United fans would love it if they could pip their title rivals to the Frenchman.

With former Real team-mate Angel Di Maria already swapping the Spanish capital for the north west, it would be no major shock for the hit-man to deliver for backers at 6/1.

Saido Berahino

He may seem somewhat of a left-field option, but there is some credibility to the West Brom man moving to Manchester United.

With Wayne Rooney reportedly set to take the role of an out-and-out central forward more this season, it could hint that a lone front man is the plan. Berahino would provide ample cover without breaking the bank, all the while adding another home-grown player to their squad.

Robert Lewandowski

If you take LVG’s recent admission that the man they are after “is not the striker that the media has written” at face value, could Lewandowksi be their man?

United have already raided Bayern Munich once this summer, signing Bastian Schweinsteiger, and with Van Gaal a long-time admirer of the 17-goal Bundesliga striker a move could be close.

Thomas Muller

Maybe the talk of it not being a forward the club have been linked with is all a ruse, and the reported £69m bid for Thomas Muller has actually been put forward.

It wouldn’t be the silliest idea for the Premier League outfit to deny talks, in order to avoid alerting rivals to the German’s availability. Could it all be a game of bluff for the Dutchman at the Old Trafford helm?
