#CultClashes – Five epic meetings between Man City and Chelsea

Last weekend marked the start of a new season and while it may have ended up a drab affair, Man United v Tottenham was expected to be the standout tie.
This weekend we’re hoping for better when champions Chelsea travel to early league leaders Manchester City and looking at these previous fixtures we could be in for a belter.

Chelsea 5—0 Man City – March 22 2003
With Peter Schmeichel in goal City fans probably thought the by-now customary loss to Chelsea might not come. How wrong they were. The legendary Danish stopper was helpless as the Blues ran riot thanks to goals from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, John Terry, Mario Stanic, Frank Lampard and William Gallas.
It was all too much for Sun Ji Hai, who picked up two yellows in the last five minutes to compound the Citizens’ misery.
Man City 1-0 Chelsea – October 16 2004
When Manchester City returned to the Premier League in 2002-03 they knew beating Chelsea, something they hadn’t done since 1994, would be one of the tougher tasks. They didn’t manage it in those first two campaigns, losing all four games with the Blues to take their winless streak to 12 matches, but finally achieved it in October 2004.
A Nicolas Anelka penalty was enough to see a fledgling City side get the better of a Blues team boasting the likes of Petr Cech, Claude Makelele, Lampard and Terry that would eventually win the title – and a huge weight was lifted.
Chelsea 6-0 Man City – October 27 2007
Four years later and Chelsea were at it again, only this time going one better. Michael Essien got the party started as early as the 16th minute before a Didier Drogba brace – struck either side of the break – put the tie beyond doubt.
The Blues fans were already cheering a win before Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and even Andriy Shevchenko got in on the act.
Chelsea 2-4 Man City – February 27 2010
With their well documented off-field argument filling the newspapers the whole country tuned in to see if Wayne Bridge and Terry would shake hands before the game.
With even neutral fans adopting a Team Bridge stance in the private matter there were plenty of smiles as Carlos Tevez cancelled out a Lampard opener before Craig Bellamy gave the hosts the lead.
Julian Belletti and Michael Ballack tried a little too hard to restore parity and picked up red cards before the City duo struck again to put the game beyond doubt. Lamps added a second at the death but the damage had already been done.
Man City 1-1 Chelsea – September 21 2014
When Chelsea decided Frank Lampard was no longer cut out for the Premier League and allowed him to join MLS side New York City few people expected to see him end up at the Etihad.
While Lampard will never publicly decry his Stamford Bridge exit he must have struggled to hold in his delight after netting a debut equaliser against his old club just eight minutes after entering the fray.
