Fantasy Football: Joint-leaders after Week 1 as Professor slumps

Published:

Even The Professor can have an off week. At least that’s what he will be telling himself when he sees the table for the Ladbrokes Life Fantasy Football League after Gameweek 1.

The bearded genius sits way, way down in 544th position with his Statletico Madrid side picking up just 21 points over the course of the weekend.

To be fair to our man, with no Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United or Tottenham players making it into this week’s ‘Dream Team’ it may have been a week of surprises in terms of points scoring.

Here’s the best line-up you could have picked on the opening weekend…

Tell the duo of Robert Kelly and Adam Bennett that it’s been a tricky week and they will probably laugh at you, as they sit atop the 569-man league with 66 points apiece.

The fomer’s Can’t Stop Scoring saw a back-line of four all pick up six or more points, while Yaya Toure and Ross Barkley both ensured there were goals in his side.

Bennett made full use of the new features in the game in his quest for that £100 top prize, utilising his Triple Captain option.

It’s a shame then, that rather than opt for Toure or Vincent Kompany for the skipper’s armband, he chose two-points-scoring Eden Hazard.

Taking the bragging rights for the Ladbrokes Life crew after the first weekend is Generous John.

His band of merry men make the top-50 with 49 points accrued so far. Like one of the league leaders, it could have been so much better as well.

Opting to pick Thibaut Courtois in goal looked a solid shout with the gloves, that was until he received his marching orders, and changes could be in order before the weekend.

What’s more, our man had the 14 points racked up by Ryad Mahrez stuck on the bench, while Yannick Bolasie stole a place in the starting XI with just the solitary point.

It could all change very quickly though, with 37 more games to play, and much tinkering will be needed throughout the sides in the league.

So where do we go for Gameweek 2?

A fixture pitting Manchester City and Chelsea against each other could mean that avoiding players from either team is wise again, with the two behemoths hard to weigh up taking each other on.

A home tie against newly promoted Bournemouth could see Liverpool players a popular choice, with game-winner Philippe Coutinho out to prove his worth once again.

It will be tough elsewhere though, with four of the other five winners from the opening weekend taking each other on, it will be down to the cunning of the Fantasy bosses up and down the league.
