Is Lucas Biglia really what Man United need?

Manchester United are reportedly on the brink of signing Lucas Biglia from Lazio in yet another move that does little to allay Red Devils fans’ concerns.

The 29-year-old Argentine is highly respected defensive midfielder following some stunning displays for Anderlecht saw him earn a move to Serie A where he has helped guide the Rome side to the Coppa Italia final last year.

However, with United already boasting the likes of Michael Carrick, Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini among the defensive midfield ranks questions arise as to where the 34-cap Argentina man would fit into Louis van Gaal’s plans.

The more pressing situation at Old Trafford appears to be the recruitment of an experienced centre back and with Sergio Ramos on the brink of singing a new deal at Real Madrid and Jonny Evans now odds-on to move to Everton United fans are growing restless.

According to Le10Sport, Biglia could arrive in a £17.7m swoop by the end of the week and while the Lazio man would add competition for places in a squad that could once again have Champions League football to contend with, the money could perhaps be better spent elsewhere.

If United, as reports suggest, are willing to let Evans go to Goodison Park then the fee involved for the Northern Irishman added to the near £18m United are supposedly setting aside for Biglia would almost amount to the £30m the Toffees are reportedly asking for John Stones.

The England defender is currently 4/7 to remain at Everton, even-money to move to Stamford Bridge and a distant 10/1 to join United.

However, with Chelsea dragging their heels and United seemingly keen to offer Evans to Everton, a Stones to United deal could still be in the offing.

Regardless of whether Stones follows Fellaini from Goodison to Old Trafford United fans will feel the Biglia fee should instead go towards a new centre back.

Unless of course they think Chris Smalling and Phil Jones can be the bedrock of a title-winning defence.

Odds of 11/2 on United taking Chelsea’s crown would suggest those that do are in the minority.
