Ronaldo beats Best in Man United number seven poll

Published:

Following on from last night’s masterclass by Manchester United wunderkind Memphis Depay we decided to indulge in a little bit of mischief with regards to the iconic number seven shirt at Old Trafford.

No, we’re not saying that Dutch international Memphis is going to be greatest wearer of the shirt but we did ask you who you think holds that accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo came out on top with 46 per cent of the vote while legendary Red Devils figure George Best was second with 35 per cent.

Does that say more about the age of our readership? Possibly.

With a total of 118 goals in 292 appearances between 2003 and 2009, the Portuguese star dazzled the United faithful and lit up the Premier League before heading to Real Madrid.

Next up is mercurial Frenchman Eric Cantona, a symbolic figure in the Red Devils’ revival of the early nineties and forever a cult icon among the Stretford End.

And finally, David Beckham may well enjoy greater fame and fortune than any of his fellow club legends – although Ronaldo may run him close soon – but on the pitch he obviously didn’t do enough to merit being named the greatest United number seven.
