Chelsea tell Spurs to name price for left-back, as long as it’s £15m

If there was one chairman in the Premier League you probably wouldn’t want “naming his price” for a player it’s Tottenham’s Daniel Levy.
Having developed a reputation as a hard-nosed deal maker during his time in the White Hart Lane boardroom, Levy has reportedly been told to do just that by Chelsea for Danny Rose.
Daily Mirror chief sports writer Dave Kidd makes the claim, suggesting that the Englishman has surpassed Augsburg left-back Abdul Baba Rahman as the Blues’ number one target in that position.
Interestingly, after penning both a headline and opening paragraph that suggests Chelsea are willing to pay anything to get their man, Kidd goes on to cap the Blues’ interest in Rose at £15m, stating that they will return to Germany to bid £17m for Rahman should Levy want any more than that.
The rumour is as confusing as it is unlikely, with the only basis for it seemingly lying in the fact that Rose is English and would help the Stamford Bridge club’s home-grown quota.
That the 7/4 Premier League title hopefuls are in the market for a left-back is no secret after selling Filipe Luis, but it has long been Rahman that has been earmarked to replace the Brazilian in west London.
Just as rumours linking Rose with Manchester City vanished without any substance, gossip around a Chelsea switch will be old hat before the week is out.
Mauricio Pochettino called Rose the best English left-back in the league last season, so probably won’t want him leaving anytime soon.
Using a combination of Rose and Ben Davies to manage the club’s assault both domestically and in Europe was a strong suit of the Argentine’s last term and there is little reason for him to change that strategy ahead of a new campaign in which his club are 4/6 to finish in the top six.
