He might be on his way to becoming England’s all-time leading goalscorer but the majority of fans don’t rate Wayne Rooney as the Three Lions’ greatest ever.

Ladbrokes News readers have let their voice be heard with a resounding 71 per cent voting ‘no’ when we put the question to them this morning.

Rooney could better Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals for the national team if he can bag a brace against minnows San Marino.

However, even the prospect of that feat couldn’t persuade the majority that he’s England’s finest.

Charlton bagged his impressive haul in 106 outings for his country while the pretender to his crown has notched 48 goals in 105 appearances.

However, while the pair are difficult to separate based on that statistic it’s Sir Bobby’s exploits at major tournaments that have probably swayed the public.

The Manchester United and England legend was instrumental in the hosts’ 1966 World Cup triumph and bagged four hat-tricks during his international stint.

Meanwhile, Rooney’s solitary World Cup goal against Uruguay last year and below-par performances on the big stage have led some pundits to question his overall contribution to the England cause.
