Queen of the South’s new striker promising goals at Palmerston Park
Queen of the South have scored just one goal in their last three games, but in new arrival Gary Oliver they have a man who is promising to change that.
After a good start, winning their opening three Ladbrokes Championship matches, the points have dried up for the Doonhammers, losing against Morton, Rangers and the struggling St Mirren, in which Oliver was a late addition from the bench.
Arriving on a season-long contract after leaving Hearts, 20-year-old Oliver is determined to change that and has assured fans that given the opportunity he can fire them back to form.
“I think I’ll do well at Queens, I know I’ll score goals if I get the chance. That’s why I moved,” he told the Edinburgh News.
A self-confessed ‘fox in the box’, Oliver has spoke of how his new side’s style would suit him perfectly.
“It’s not too much of a change from Hearts because Queens play the same way. They’re a good football team to play in.
“I like when the ball is in the box, that’s my game. Queen of the South have a lot of experienced strikers who are good players, and I’m sure they’ll give me tips.”
A scorer of a number of goals for Hearts in pre-season friendlies, and a player that has failed to shed his “promising youngster” tag, Oliver will be hoping to rebuild his career and secure some regular playing time at a senior level at Palmerston Park.
He began to string some performances together when sent out on loan to Stenhousemuir last season, when an injury crisis at Tynecastle forced his parent club to recall him, only for him to be stuck on the bench for the remainder of the campaign.
The experienced striking duo of Derek Lyle and Paul Heffernan will be able to provide plenty of advice to the youngster, as the Dumfries outfit look to bounce back to form.
He may not have made the starting XI against St Mirren, but if he is given the chance in the upcoming match against Raith Rovers, the 11/2 on him opening the scoring suggests he could well repay the faith that James Fowler has shown in him.
