Everton striker to show Belgian boss who’s boss in derby clash

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots must have bought a flat in England by now given the extent of his squad that operate in the Premier League, but if there was one game he should be attending, then it’s Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

From an attacking perspective, the Red Devils boss will never have had the opportunity to potentially witness his top three candidates to lead the line, playing in the same high-profile game.

Goodison Park is the stage for a Merseyside derby where it’s Everton, not Liverpool, who are the favourites to take the spoils for once and potentially bring the curtain down on Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool career, if speculation is to be believed.

In Belgium’s last Euro 2016 qualifier with Cyprus in September, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Liverpool’s Divock Origi warmed the bench, while Christian Benteke, also now at Anfield, played the lone striker role Wilmots prefers to set up with.

Prior to that against Bosnia, it was Lukaku who got the nod, but it’s quite clear the three of them are vying for one starting spot in the team when the Euros roll around.

Unfortunately for Liverpool there are some doubts over Benteke’s availability for the crunch derby fixture, while Origi’s bright, but ultimately fruitless midweek display is almost certain to see him replaced by Daniel Sturridge.

However, there is no debating Lukaku will play an integral role for the Toffees, with their record signing provided a gilt-edged chance to demonstrate his place in the Belgian pecking order, following a fine start to the season.

Lukaku has six goals in all competitions already, bagging the second of two Premier League braces against West Brom to help inspire victory last time out.

With Liverpool’s failings from last season still very much evident at the back, Lukaku looks a fine bet to score as part of an Everton victory, especially as this outcome has been boosted by Ladbrokes from 7/2 to 5/1.
