Poll: Is Sam Burgess set for a dramatic rugby league return?
Published:
The word from Stuart Lancaster is that Sam Burgess has made no suggestion that a switch back to rugby league is on the cards, yet the rumours about his future continue to swirl around.
A move to Leeds Rhinos has been the talk of the town after he was dropped from the England squad for their final match of a dismal World Cup campaign.
But the man in charge of the England team sees no reason for him to end his Union career after just a year.
“I’ve not had any conversations with him about a move to rugby league at all,” Lancaster told Sky Sports.
“Genuinely, 100 per cent I didn’t know that story was out there. My last conversation with him was about him going back to Bath. He can’t wait to get stuck into the Premiership.”
Burgess’ selection in the World Cup squad in the first place was one that divided opinion, with the former South Sydney Rabbitohs man only making his Test debut on August 15 against France.
Some might argue that he hadn’t yet delivered enough in his new code to warrant a place in the team, regardless of his exploits in the NRL.
The player himself has been quiet on the issue, failing to clarify what he plans to do in the near future.
On one hand he could see a move back to League as one that would make him a big(ger) fish in a slightly smaller pond, but it could also suggest that his foray into a second form of the game has been a failed one.
So we are putting it to you, the Ladbrokes News readers; should Sam Burgess make the switch back to Rugby League and cut short his foray into Union? Or should the Dewsbury-born star stick it out at the Rec with Bath?
