Spurs v Liverpool: Hosts primed to turn tide in spite of Klopp-mania

Published:

Tottenham take on Liverpool in the Premier League’s whistle whetting fixture and while Jurgen Klopp’s dug-out debut is the main storyline, the sub-plot is that Spurs are a totally transformed beast from the one the Reds have waltzed past recently at White Hart Lane.

Seldom, if ever, has there been more fanfare over a Premier League managerial appointment, but as Klopp shrewdly pointed out, he is not in the business of performing miracles.

He could hardly have asked for a trickier dugout baptism either and after a trip to White Hart Lane the German’s ‘Normal One’ message might just sink in with Liverpool fans understandably delusional with delight over their new signing.

As a venue the Lane may have provided visiting Liverpool fans much joy in the past two seasons –Brendan Rodgers oversaw 5-0 and 3-0 raids latterly – but with the visitors in transition, the landscape is vastly different in 2015/16.

Unlike Klopp, who’s barely had a week to impress his philosophy upon his new squad, September’s Premier League manager of the month, Mauricio Pochettino, looks to have fully indoctrinated his settled Spurs squad to his ways, with a season under his belt.

Under the Argentine tactician Spurs have only been defeated once in eight games this term and have taken on a defensive rigidity rarely associated with the North London club in the Premier League era.

More crucially though, a thumping 4-1 win over Manchester City in their last home game, a team more notorious than Liverpool for traumatising the Lilywhites faithful in recent times, must have altered the mindset at the Lane.

Such a result can be season-changing in nature and in lieu this one Spurs look good value at 7/5 to stop the rot against the Reds, earn three points and bring a reality check to the Kop.

Liverpool have not won on their travels since the opening day at Stoke, which remains one of only three victories in 11 matches in all competitions so far.
