BBC punt pays off big as Salford City show their FA Cup mettle

| 07.11.2015

You can have 3500/1 with Ladbrokes about Salford City lifting the FA Cup this year after their 2-0 first-round win against Notts County, and the way things are going for the club part-owned by former Manchester United troupe the Class of ’92, that price could get much shorter yet.

One-time Red Devils forward prospect Danny Webber, who made three Champions League and League Cup appearances for United in the early noughties, bagged the opener just after half time at Salford’s Moor Lane home, before Richie Allen sent the Magpies packing with quarter of an hour to go.

The ex-Old Trafford contingent off the pitch, on this occasion Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, with fellow co-owners Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville seemingly elsewhere, looked pretty chuffed with their investment.

The contrasting Twitter reactions of brothers Gary and Phil were noteworthy…

…though it must be said, ‘Fizzer’ had pointed out that he’s stuck in a hotel room in Vigo, in his role as Valencia assistant manager.

Credit must go to the BBC’s ability to sniff out an emerging story, with the national broadcaster showcasing Salford City’s finest hour just weeks after airing the two-part documentary ‘Class of ’92: Out Of Their League’, which followed the famous five’s efforts at the club during the second half of last season.

After the Kersal-based outfit fulfilled their end of the bargain in front of the nation on Friday night, and with Aunty Beeb based around the corner in MediaCity, Salford’s televised story may only just be starting.
