Defences to play big parts this weekend at Falkirk and Morton

| 13.11.2015

The international week may have taken its toll on the fixture list in the upper echelons of the Scottish football, but we still have a pair of fixtures to enjoy in the Ladbrokes Championship.

With neither of the top two in action, it will be a perfect opportunity for the chasing pack to continue the pressure on Rangers and Hibernian in the pursuit for Premiership football.

We’ve perused over the form and the odds to pick out a couple of bets for the action at both Falkirk Stadium and Cappielow this weekend.

Here’s how we see the fixtures going…

Falkirk v Alloa

Since being taking apart 7-0 by Ross County in the League Cup, Falkirk have really got their act together, winning four of their last five matches.

A 1-0 defeat to Hibs is their only blip in that period, and with the Edinburgh side winning their last seven, that’s no disgrace.

Striker John Baird is the man that has been delivering the goods for the Bairns of late, netting five goals in his last three matches, and is 5/6 to get on the scoresheet once again.

He might not have too much trouble adding to that tally with the form Alloa have been in of late, with the Wasps picking up just two points in their last eight fixtures.

Their real trouble has been scoring goals, with just three strikes in that time. And with Falkirk in fine form, and keeping it together well at the back, it could be day with little to cheer about for Athletic.

Best bet: Falkirk to win to nil @ 6/5

Greenock Morton v Queen of the South

Defences could hold the key at Cappielow as well, as Morton and Queen’s clash for the third time in two months in the league, with the winners moving into the play-off spots.

Ton boss Jim Duffy praised his side’s defensive capabilities when they saw off a dogged Livingston outfit last time out. An early penalty put the Renfrewshire side one-up, but they had to show real doggedness to see off a determined Livi outfit.

It could be more of the same here, especially if Morton’s home form continues. They have seen no more than one goal scored in four of their last games in front of their own fans, making a punt on that run continuing look value at 13/5.

Even if the goals did surpass that tally, it is unlikely to be much, with eight of their last nine at home featuring under 2.5 goals.

Queens themselves are hardly big scorers on the road, only managing two or more twice in their last 11 road-trips, hinting that this one could be lacking in goal-mouth action.

Best bet: Under 2.5 goals @ 10/11
