POLL RESULT: Clubs should go and find more Jamie Vardys

Published:

Jamie Vardy has proven that success doesn’t have to come after a huge transfer fee, and the former non-league man appears to have kicked off a trend.

Leicester’s in-form forward leads the way comfortably in the Premier League goalscoring charts with 12 goals from 12 games, and the former Halifax town man is currently on a nine-game scoring streak in England’s top division.

The Foxes shelled out just £1m his signature from Fleetwood Town in 2013, and the Englishman has already paid them back and then some with his glut of goals.

In light of the 28-year-old’s performances this season, we asked you if you think teams should be doing more to scout the lower echelons of British football and the results are pretty convincing.

Some 82 per cent of you voted yes, saying teams should do more to scout in non-league.

Ian Wright, Vinnie Jones and Stuart Pearce are just three Premier League legends who plied their trade in non-league, and Vardy’s current form suggests there are still many diamonds to be found in the non-league rough.

A few of you disagreed with Luton Town boss John Still however, who told the BBC: “Vardy is not a one-off. There’s more out there that deserve a chance.”

The no voters totalled 18 per cent of today’s poll, perhaps preferring their Angel di Marias and Kevin de Bruynes to the cut-price Vardys and Wrights of this world.
