Poll Result: Euro 2016 qualification not Ireland’s crowning glory

Qualifying for the finals of Euro 2016 should not be seen as the Republic of Ireland’s biggest achievement in football.
That is according to the latest poll by Ladbrokes News, which found that despite Irish fans buzzing at the thought of attending the finals in France they feel bigger feats have been achieved by the Boys in Green.
It comes after Ireland’s hero Jonathan Walters bagged a brace at the Aviva Stadium to ensure a 3-1 aggregate win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and a place at Euro 2016.
BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson claimed the fact that Ireland’s current crop of players aren’t playing at the highest level means their qualification should be regarded as their best ever moment, but just 38 per cent of our readers agreed.
The famous Euro 88 team recording a 1-0 over an England outfit containing the likes of John Barnes, Gary Lineker, Bryan Robson and Chris Waddle is just one of the other options.
The resolute Italia 90 team, which made it all the way to the quarter finals on the back of a strong defence would also be in the running while the 1-0 win over eventual winners Italy at USA 94, courtesy of a Ray Houghton thunderbolt, could also be a contender.
With a resounding 62 per cent disagreeing with Lawrenson and saying the most recent cause for celebration is not the biggest it’s clear Walters and co. still have something to prove in the summer.
