Spurs cap off a stellar week in Europe for Premier League clubs

What crisis? Following an opening week of losses and draws in European competition leading to forecasts of doom for English clubs, the Premier League has bitten back like a wounded Alsatian.
Although a humiliating loss to Bayern Munich left Arsenal teetering on the brink of Champions League oblivion, aside from the Gunners’ woes, the outlook for the rest of the Premier League clubs is far rosier than many predicted.
Moussa Dembele’s late torpedo which sunk Anderlecht ensured Tottenham joined Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool as winners in Europe this week.
Now all of those clubs, especially City who booked their place with two games to spare, will have at least one eye on the knockout stages.

Manchester City: 4/9 to win Champions League Group D
Defeat at home to Juventus on the opening day inevitably led to cries of “same old City” in Europe.
Three wins later, two away from home no less, and Manuel Pellegrini’s side are one of only three clubs assured of a place in the knockout stages. Sergio Aguero is rumoured to be a few weeks away from a return as well.
Manchester United: 8/15 to win Champions League Group B
United’s Group B campaign got off to a similarly shaky start with defeat at PSV, but three games later and the Red Devils are a point in front of the pack. Barring a disastrous end to proceedings Louis Van Gaal’s side look destined to join their rivals in the last 16.
Chelsea: 17/10 to win Champions League Group G
The inescapable air of disaster that has haunted Chelsea’s wretched Premier League title defence had threatened to derail their Champions League campaign after a loss in Porto was followed by a disappointing draw at Dynamo Kiev.
However, with Jose Mourinho’s job seemingly on the line, the Blues’ star performer popped up with a vital goal to sink the Ukrainians at Stamford Bridge. Where Chelsea would be without Willian’s free kicks this season doesn’t bear thinking about though.
Liverpool: 5/6 to win Europa League Group B
The ‘Klopp effect’ was in full effect at Rubin Kazan in gameweek four. Although the 1-0 scoreline wasn’t emphatic, the high-pressing, slick performance was.
Now the Reds have ended their harmful run of draws, escaping Group B looks something of a formality from here and with leaders Sion yet to play, winning the group is a very attainable target.
Tottenham: 2/5 to win Europa League Group J
Having lost to Belgian giants Anderlecht away from home, anything other than a win would have left Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side with an uphill struggle to qualify.
As it was, the Lilywhites’ impressive Premier League form and defensive resilience transferred to continental competition and now they sit top of Group J by a point.
