Back Liverpool to take initiative in Group B decider at Sion

Published:

Having already qualified for the Europa League knockout stages, Liverpool travel to Switzerland with the mission statement of ensuring FC Sion do not wrestle top spot in Group B off them.

A draw would be enough for Jurgen Klopp’s charges, although after disappointment at Newcastle last time out, the German manager will be expecting a big response and, with that, victory.

The away win is the most likely outcome with Ladbrokes at 5/4, shading the draw at 19/10 and leaving a group-topping victory for Sion as the 14/5 outsider.

The teams drew 1-1 at Anfield earlier in the group stages on a frustrating night for Liverpool which proved to be Brendan Rodgers’ penultimate game in charge.

However, having enjoyed 61 per cent of the ball and more than doubling the Swiss visitors’ shot count, that encounter was more one sided than the scoreline suggested.

With Liverpool winning their last two Group B matches under Klopp, and up until that blip at Newcastle, terrorising teams on their travels, the Reds’ extra quality ought to see them home in Sion.

Other than the high-pressing style which has served Liverpool so well on their travels under Klopp, one factor sure to aid the away side’s chances is their knack of getting their noses in front in the competition.

The Merseysiders have drawn first blood in four of their five Europa League assignments this term, including in both away matches in Group B.

It is 4/5 with Ladbrokes that it’s the Premier League outfit who score first again on Thursday night, in a wager that makes oodles of sense.

In terms of potential deadlock-breakers for Liverpool, Adam Lallana has to be an attractive proposition at 8/1, given he’s already done so twice in the competition.

Lallana was rested at St James’ Park too, but should be reinstalled here and could be a great exponent of the bookmaker’s *Double Odds 1st Goal Scorer promotion on televised matches.

Liverpool’s susceptibility to conceding a token goal – it’s happened in four out of five games as well – is certainly worth noting as well, given Ladbrokes’ other price boost on the tie.

The bookmaker have enhanced the price on victory for Liverpool with both teams scoring from 4/1 out to 5/1.
