Poll: Will Arsenal and Chelsea crash out of the Champions League?

Published:

Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion last night and the Red Devils could soon be joined by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Gunners have it all to do with a daunting trip to Greece standing between Arsene Wenger’s side and qualification to the knockout stages.

The head-to-head stats between the north London club and Greek outfit Olympiakos means Arsenal must either win 2-0 or win and score at least three if the hosts get on the scoresheet in order to progress.

Wenger’s side currently lie in third and with injury problems mounting there is a real concern that a Europa League campaign lies in wait.

Things don’t seem quite so precarious for Chelsea, with the Blues currently topping Group G but the make-up of the standings means defeat for Jose Mourinho’s side is likely to see them also crash out.

Chelsea play host to Porto, having already lost to Mourinho’s old side, while Dynamo Kiev are expected to take all three points against a winless Maccabi Tel-Aviv, forcing Chelsea to match that result or at least draw and hope the goal difference is in their favour.

A home win against Porto wouldn’t usually be too much of an ask for the reigning Premier League champions but with Chelsea languishing in 15th place and coming into the tie on the back of a home defeat to newly-promoted Bournemouth there is some serious doubt in the air.
