Tottenham backed to land first European trophy in 32 years

Tottenham fans are set to be celebrating success in Europe for the first time in over 30 years come May if today’s Ladbrokes News poll is to be believed.
After the final line-up for the knock-out stage of the Europa League was decided last night we put it to you, the readers, to tell us who would be lifting that giant vase in Basel next year.
And it’s a rather refreshing result for English football with Tottenham coming home in front, with Liverpool chasing them home in second as Manchester United clung onto their coat-tails in third.
The Lilywhites picked up a very solid 27 per cent of the vote, while the Reds attracted 19 per cent and Louis van Gaal’s men picked up 15 per cent.
The last time Spurs landed European silverware none of their starting XI from their fixture against Monaco on Thursday was alive, as Keith Burkinshaw guided the Londoners to a 1983-84 penalty shoot-out success over Anderlecht.
Despite their backing in the poll, and the fact that they haven’t lost in 14 matches in all competitions Mauricio Pochettino’s men remain 14/1 sixth-favourites to lift the trophy.
Should they go on to victory in Switzerland, they will have already usurped their best showing since they picked up the trophy by reaching the semi finals.
With the form they are in and the fact they have just three ties to negotiate, you wouldn’t be surprised to see them do just that.
The support for the English teams in our poll was perhaps unsurprising, but the best of the rest as far as the continental contingent (apart from ‘other’) is concerned were Borussia Dortmund picked up 12 of the votes.
Incidentally, they are the favourites to win the competition priced up as 6/1 chances.
But according to our poll, the traders have got it all wrong and the trophy will not be returning to Germany, but will be sent back from Basel stamped and addressed to N17.
