Arsenal join Manchester United in chase for Dortmund star

| 07.01.2016

Arsene Wenger has shown in recent years he isn’t afraid to make big-name signings, and according to reports the Arsenal boss has another headline swoop in the pipeline.

The Frenchman has seen Olivier Giroud perform admirably up front while Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck continue their returns from injury, but question marks remain over Giroud’s all-round ability and lack of pace.

It seems that’s something Wenger is looking to resolve with reports now closely linking the 66-year-old to Borussia Dortmund’s unstoppable forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 26-year-old has struck 27 goals in 27 appearances for BVB this term and the Gabon striker would surely relish latching on those delightful assists from the king of set-ups Mesut Ozil.

A sublime free-kick taker allied to lightning pace, a front pairing of Sanchez and Aubameyang would doubtless give defenders nightmares for weeks on end.

The Gabon international has also long-been courted by Manchester United, but of the two, Arsenal – 21/20 Premier League favourites – surely represent the better opportunities if this season is anything to go by.

Speculation was further fuelled this week when Aubameyang failed to report for Dortmund’s first training session after the winter break.

Dortmund are unwilling to listen to any offers under £40m, but that’s a price tag which no longer fazes Arsene Wenger after shelling out a club-record £42m on Ozil in 2013.

The Gunners are firmly in the mix for Premier League success this year – a first title in 12 years is in the offing – but injuries to Wenger’s frontline threaten to derail Arsenal’s title bid at every turn.

Pull off a signing of Aubameyang’s quality – just as he’s approaching his prime – and the red half of north London can go full steam ahead for the crunch half of the season.
