West Ham need to cash in on Newcastle and Sunderland target

Andy Carroll may have got a fantastic new hairstyle, but that doesn’t warrant the rumoured £18million Newcastle United and Sunderland are willing to spend on the West Ham man.

The Hammers parted with £3million less than that to bring him to Upton Park and few would have thought they’d be able to recoup more than that by selling him on.

Since joining the Londoners in 2013, Carroll has only scored 17 times across all competitions and has missed 77 matches through injury, eight more than he has managed to play.

Sunderland and Newcastle need goals, having only found the net 22 and 19 times respectively in the Premier League and must see the towering striker as a way to solve this.

Obviously, the situation at both north east suitors is dire as they are firmly entrenched in the battle for survival, but surely it can’t be so bad that they need to shell out this much on the English striker.

In fairness to Carroll, the 11 goals he scored in 19 top-flight matches for Newcastle in 2010 show that he can score at the highest level of English football, but that was over five years ago.

Since then his highest tally is seven, during his first season at West Ham, but he somehow looks set to have a combined career transfer fee of £68million.

If this latest deal goes through, it would put the England international above Mesut Ozil, Juan Mata and Kaka in terms of total fees.

The Hammers have already proved they can get by without Carroll as they have had to do so throughout most of his Upton Park career and an extra £18million in January could really help Slaven Bilic’s side.

Charlie Austin could be looking to head to the Premier League in this window and reinvesting some of that hefty sum to bring in the QPR man would be a wise move.
