Watch: Partick Thistle dent Dundee United’s faint survival hopes

| 06.04.2016

Dundee United suffered a major setback in their bid to avoid relegation from the Ladbrokes Premiership last night, following a 1-0 defeat to Partick Thistle at Firhill.

Mixu Paatelainen’s men had made up ground on fellow strugglers Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical with their 1-0 triumph at St. Johnstone on Saturday.

However, United failed to take advantage of their game in hand on those two sides on Tuesday night.

Kris Doolan’s neat side-footed strike in the 71st minute handed the Jags a 1-0 victory and left the Tangerines five points adrift of 11th-placed Kilmarnock with just four games remaining.

Doolan’s winner was a rare moment of magic for the hosts in a game where United dominated but just could not score.

Ryan Dow missed several first-half chances for the visitors before McKay narrowly lobbed over the bar.

Meanwhile, Thistle’s highly-rated Czech ‘keeper Tomas Cerny made a string of superb saves, the pick of the bunch coming to prevent John Rankin before the break.

United struggled to respond to Doolan’s goal, though, and the resulting defeat leaves them  mired at the bottom, with the Terrors now 1/6 to finish in the bottom spot and suffer the ignominy of automatic relegation.

There is no doubt their performances have improved under Paatelainen, though, and United head into their must-win Premiership clash against Inverness at 23/20 to win.

Thistle are next in action away at off-form Ross County, with the visiting Jags 11/5 to claim all three points.
