Dundee United fell short in the Ladbrokes Championship last term. And captain Fraser Fyvie believes anything other than a title triumph this season would be a failure.

Speaking exclusively to us, the 25-year-old explained: “I don’t think we can ask the fans to be patient. We have to show them that we can win this league.”

“We as players, the manager and the coaching staff need to get the fans on-side as quickly as possible because they are really important to us.”

However, the midfielder is aware that Csaba Laszlo’s new-look side may take a little while to reach their peak.

Despite a big turnover of players during the summer, Fyvie believes the side has to get into gear quickly.

The midfielder said: “We’ve had a turnaround of 12 or 13 players and there are more coming each week so we need time for them to gel.”

“However, we need to start getting results right away – it’s as simple as that.”

On a personal level, the former Aberdeen prodigy has been delighted to have been given the armband this season. But he understands the real battle is to come.

Fyvie said: “It would be a very proud moment for me if I was the captain that helped the club get back up where everyone thinks they should be.”

“It’s a huge honour to be captain and I will need to learn quickly and find my own way of doing it.”

The Championship title is firmly the aim at Tannadice – but Fyvie knows it’ll be a tough ask.

He admitted: ““It’s a big statement we need to make this year. There are good teams in there – Ross County, Partick Thistle and Inverness – and Dunfermline, who we were really lucky to beat in the play-offs last season.”

The Tangerines’ next league game comes at home to Partick Thistle on Saturday.

As it stands, Dundee United are 7/2 second-favourites to win the Championship.
