Poll Reaction: Voters split on Joey Barton boosting Rangers’ title tilt

Published:

Mark Warburton’s exciting acquisition of Joey Barton is just the signing to make the Ibrox club title challengers in next season’s Ladbrokes Premiership, at least according to 50 per cent of voters in today’s poll.

However, the other half of those who voted are decidedly less convinced in the former Manchester City man’s ability to help Rangers wrestle the title back from Celtic, who have managed an impressive five-in-a-row.

The voting here is perhaps an accurate reflection of Barton’s ‘Marmite’ status with fans – many of whom admire his skill, passion, and honest remarks, while others are decidedly less keen on the outspoken midfielder.

Chances are that a significant chunk of the 50 per cent of votes backing Barton will have come from devotees of the Ibrox outfit.

The ‘Gers support have been keen to see Warburton add to an ever-improving Rangers squad with marquee names – and a former England international and Premier League heavyweight certainly fits that bill.

Warburton’s men are 11/4 to win the 2016-17 Ladbrokes Premiership, making them second-favourites ahead of 12/1 shots Aberdeen.

Celtic are understandably favourites to win a sixth successive crown at 2/7 but if Barton can recapture the form he showed in the English top-flight, we could be set for a very exciting title race indeed.
