Morton fan backs young star for glory with #WhatAreTheOdds request

Having burst onto the scene at Cappielow in early 2016, wing wizard Jai Quitongo has quickly established himself as a favourite of Greenock Morton fans.

And one Ton fan has proved especially keen, with a #WhatAreTheOdds request for the Wishaw-born winger to top the Ladbrokes Championship scoring charts this season. So, can the 40/1 shot really outgun his rivals?

He has certainly been in eye-catching form during the League Cup group stage, netting twice in Morton’s four games, with an ice-cool finish in the victory at Kilmarnock and another against Berwick Rangers at Cappielow.

There’s also little doubt the teenager – son of former Hamilton Academical striker Jose Quitongo – will be a regular starter for Morton this season, having started and scored in both of their last two cup ties. But equally there’s no question that this is an ambitious bet.

The teenager plays out on the left wing, so chances are his role will be more as a provider to centre-forward Gary Oliver than as an out-and-out goalscorer.

Indeed, the tricky winger didn’t score in any of his previous eight appearances – all from the bench – leading up to the Killie game, so it remains to be seen whether his brief goalscoring run will continue or fizzle out once the season begins.

However, age is unlikely to be a barrier for the Ton teenager. Hibernian striker Jason Cummings was the Championship top scorer in 2014-15 at the tender age of 19, and with pace, trickery and an apparent eye for goal, Quitongo appears to have many of the hallmarks of the Hibs prodigy.

Morton begin the Ladbrokes Championship campaign with a trip to St Mirren, with Jim Duffy’s men 21/10 to taste victory on the road.

And beating the Buddies in competitive action for the first time since 1999 could well see the confidence around Cappielow continue to grow, and make the 28/1 for a title triumph this season look like excellent value.
