Spurs not done with fleshing out their striker stocks

Tottenham may have added a much-needed Plan B option to supplement Harry Kane this summer, but with so many games to come and lofty ambitions in mind, a Plan C alternative to Vincent Janssen could be next on Mauricio Pochettino’s shopping list.

According to the Guardian’s daily rumour mill, Argentinian Spurs boss Pochettino has been keeping abreast of his home country’s domestic league and singled out a rising star of River Plate.

Lucas Alario only signed for the South American giants in the summer of 2015, but has wasted little time in making an impression.

The 23-year-old helped River to win the coveted Copa Libertadores title in his first season, scoring one of the three goals in the final to end a 19-year drought in continental competition for Los Millonarios.

Alario then courted yet more attention by bagging a goal in the semi-finals of FIFA’s Club World Cup last December as his side earned a rendezvous with Barcelona in the showpiece.

With a record of 19 goals in 40 appearances for River so far, it’s not difficult to imagine why Pochettino is sniffing around the two-capped Argentina international, but as the Guardian point out, the Lilywhites are not alone in terms of European-based admiration.

As well as Spurs’ confirmed interest in Alario’s future, Liverpool and Inter are other names who have vested interest in the man who bangs in a goal every other game barring a few decimal places.

It will have come as a welcome relief to all at White Hart Lane that Kane blew the scoring dust off by registering a first goal of the season against Stoke last time out, although Dutch international Janssen is yet to make his mark in four appearances so far.

While there is no need to panic about Janssen’s contribution so early in his Lilywhites career, interest in Alario will only increase if the £16m centre-forward endures a lengthy drought.

Janssen is 13/8 to break his scoring duck when Monaco visit the Lane in the Champions League next.
