More trouble ahead for Leicester unless they fix travel woe

With the arrival of October and an international break, it’s time to take stock and have a look at how the Premier League has played out thus far. For three teams, it’s clear they need to rapidly improve their away record and amazingly that includes Leicester.

The Foxes – along with Burnley and West Ham – are yet to pick up a single point on their travels.

And statistically speaking, the reigning champions are the worst of the lot, with Burnley only playing two away games and the Hammers boasting a slightly better goal difference.

Granted Claudio Ranieri’s charges have already been to Anfield and Old Trafford, but to concede four goals on both occasions is a far cry from last season’s away success.

While Arsenal and both Manchester clubs posted similar home records to the Foxes last term, Leicester’s success was ultimately based on stunning away performances which saw them win 11, draw nine and lose only twice.

No other side won more than nine times away from home last year, but this time around Leicester have already conceded 10 on the road – they only let in 18 in the whole of last season.

Things might get a little worse for Ranieri’s men too, as a quick glance down the fixture list sees their next two away trips take them to Chelsea and Tottenham.

Odds of 28/1 to go down are a reminder that the champions are in no danger of the drop, but their top six odds – 2/1 in pre-season – have headed outwards to 8/1.

A number of factors can be attributed to the Foxes’ poor travelling record, including the impact of a first foray into the Champions League, but it must also be noted that the established order – including Liverpool and United – are back to something like their powers of old following dismal spells last term.

And the Premier League is littered with the kinds of results which saw Hull defeat Leicester on the opening day.

So fans needn’t worry. They may well end up posting a 0-0-5 away record after they return from White Hart Lane, but think of it this way.

By the time November arrives, Leicester will have already gotten trips to Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham out of the way.

Then we might see the Foxes return to something like last season’s heroes.
