Why odds-against Plymouth Argyle are great value to lift title

With just six points separating Crewe Alexandra in the play-off spots from Exeter City in the relegation zone, League Two is as tight and unpredictable as they come. Except, that is, for the race to lift the title, with Plymouth Argyle far ahead of the competition in every sense.

Derek Adams’ men have now chalked up an incredible 38 points from the last 42 available, scoring two or more goals in each of their last seven games.

While today’s spirited 2-1 victory at Crewe Alexandra saw the Pilgrims come from behind, by and large, the Devon club have eased to victory in recent weeks – a fact which will surely dishearten the chasing pack.

Indeed, before the game at Gresty Road, Argyle had scored the opening goal in their last 14 league games, dating back to April – chalking up wins over the likes of Portsmouth, Notts County and Leyton Orient during that period.

And there’s every reason to believe they can maintain this level, with Plymouth’s squad the envy of all in the division.

Midfielder Graham Carey is equal top of the assists leaderboard for the division, setting up eight goals already – while the talented Irishman has also netted just as many, including a well-taken winner in Cheshire today.

Jake Jervis is another creative talent flourishing under Adams, having moved down from Ross County along with the gaffer back in 2015.

However, it’s the defensive strength the Pilgrims possess which is their strongest weapon.

The 14 goals conceded by the Home Park outfit this season gives them the distinction of having League Two’s tightest defence. And no wonder, with talented, robust and well-organised players like Sonny Bradley, Yann Songo’o and Latvian international Nauris Bulvitis in their ranks.

That alone should be enough to see them cruise to the title, but the clubs around Argyle are also aiding the champions elect by dropping points against the league’s lower lights.

Carlisle’s unbeaten run ended at home to basement-dwellers Newport earlier today, while Doncaster Rovers and Luton Town have both dropped points at home to bottom-half teams in recent weeks.

With all that in mind, the 13/10 for Plymouth Argyle to lift the League Two title looks to be an extremely generous price.
