Here’s who the money’s on in wide open Best Actor Oscars race
Published:La La Land may be set to hoover up a number of this year’s Oscars, but with the musical’s leading man Ryan Gosling a 14/1 shot for the Best Actor gong, this looks to be one market where the prize is going elsewhere.
And the punters seem to agree – with market favourites Denzel Washington and Casey Affleck having been heavily backed.
Affleck leads the running at 4/6, and one high-rolling punter is expecting him to justify those odds, with a bet of £1,000 on the Manchester by the Sea star winning the first Academy Award of his career.
But while that’s the biggest single bet so far, a number of customers are piling into the ‘Fences’ actor at odds of 6/5, with a flurry of bets placed (don’t need to give too much away) on the 62-year-old winning this prize for the second time – having already done so for his role in Training Day.
Gosling has a decent number of backers considering he’s a 14/1 outsider, but as the odds suggest, he’s some way behind Affleck and Washington in terms of the money behind him.
Andrew Garfield is a 33/1 shot to secure the prize for his stellar turn in Hacksaw Ridge, and the fact that he’s been well-backed in the past 24 hours means that a Garfield triumph is what would currently prove most costly for the bookies.
Meanwhile, there’s 80/1 on offer for those who think Viggo Mortensen could pull off a huge upset and claim glory following his role in Captain Fantastic.
