How Stevenage are the 50/1 shots everybody missed out on

With four wins from four, Stevenage are the form side in the entire Football League. And at Boro’s current rate, they’re about to come good on odds of 50/1.

But the sad part for punters – and good news for bookies – is that nobody managed to back them at that mega price at the end of January.

To be fair, Darren Sarll’s men had just lost a seventh game in nine, and they sat down in fifteenth place.

But since then the Hertfordshire outfit have rocketed up the table, winning eight and drawing one of the their last nine games.

They may have faced four sides situated eighteenth or lower in that spell, but similarly, the Boro have seen off three sides placed seventh or higher.

And what it now means is that they sit in fourth – only four points off the automatic promotion spots.

While former promotion hopefuls around them have floundered and lost their way, Stevenage have been getting better and better.

A 2-0 win away at Luton on Saturday was the latest impressive result, and the Boro are now the second-highest scorers in the division.

But it’s at both ends of the pitch where they’ve made marked improvements. After conceding 37 goals in the opening 23 games of the campaign, Stevenage’s back-line has been beaten just 14 times in 13 games since, with only five let in during this nine-game spell.

And in Matt Godden, they’ve got a striker who has definitely found his scoring boots.

The 25-year-old has fired in 13 goals in his last 13 appearances, and at that rate, can hit 30 by the season’s end.

But with 11 other players netting two goals or more this term, Stevenage are anything but a one-man club.

Once 50/1 outsiders to go up, our traders now make Sarll’s side just 5/1 to return to League One.

But given their form, we say even that price looks a tad long to us.

With 10 games to go, Stevenage’s next step to promotion comes away at Blackpool on Tuesday night.

The Tangerines’ are in decent form of their own, and though Boro are 13/5 outsiders, they were that same price to beat Luton last weekend, and at this stage of the season you can’t put a price on form and momentum.
