Arsenal v Tottenham: Which club will win the league first?

Whether Arsenal fans like it or not, the gap between themselves and bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur has never been closer in Premier League history. In fact, Spurs look all but set to finish above the Gunners for the first time in 22 years.

What that means for the future of Arsene Wenger remains to be seen. But as for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, they’ve never looked stronger.

And after making Harry Kane and co just 11/8 to win the Premier League in the next five seasons earlier this morning, our traders have priced up another North London special.

The question we asked them was simple: which club will win the Premier League first?

Their answer is likely to anger one set of fans…

Despite Spurs currently sitting some 11 points ahead of their neighbours, and with their rivals in all sorts of turmoil, the Gunners are priced as more likely to win the league again before Spurs do.

Or to be more precise, our odds-compilers have priced up Arsenal at 4/5.

Meanwhile, 10/11 says Pochettino’s man can stamp their authority on the division before Arsenal win their fourth Premier League title.

It’s a question we’ve thrown around the office all morning, and we have to say it’s a difficult one to answer.

So we wanted to know what you think.

Given what we’ve seen this season you’d have to say that the balance of power has shifted in North London. Tottenham have been easily the second-best team in the country this term and could still get closer still to champions-elect Chelsea.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been the perfect fit and providing he’s able to carry on his fine work then it’ll be his Spurs outfit lifting the Premier League trophy before Arsenal do so again.

Of course, we don’t have a crystal ball and there are a lot of factors to consider. Will Poch be tempted to La Liga? How will the re-development of White Hart Lane impact upon Spurs’ finances? The answers to those questions will reveal a lot more.

However, the Gunners have their own problems to deal with. The toxic atmosphere around the Emirates, coupled with uncertainty around Arsene Wenger’s future and that of key players, means Arsenal look likely to fall further behind their rivals in the short-term at least.

It pains me that these odds are so close.

But I have to take my (Gooner) hat off to Tottenham in the last two years – they’re easily the strongest all-round side in the division right now behind Chelsea.

There’s so much that needs sorting at the Emirates before the title can be considered a realistic aim. Problems with the board, problems with the boss, plenty of deadwood in the squad. Not everyone is pulling their weight, and the squad could actually learn a thing or two from their neighbours.

Providing Spurs don’t cause an upset this season and overthrow Chelsea, things will only get tougher next time out. If they finish above Arsenal – who knows, maybe that’s what some of the players need at the Emirates to kick-start their careers with some fire in their bellies.

At least, that’s what I’m hoping for. So I’d be putting my money on what my heart is telling me!
