Middlesbrough defensive ace wanted by Tottenham and West Brom

Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion are set to go head-to-head for Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson.

According to the Daily Express, both clubs are in for the coveted defender, with the Baggies already seeing an £18m bid knocked backed by the Teessiders.

Gibson made 41 appearances last season for the North Yorkshire club, contributing to a defensive line which kept an impressive 13 clean sheets in league and cup.

The £25m rated centre-half impressed suitors with a string of impressive displays, culminating in a call-up to the full England squad in March.

New Boro boss Garry Monk does not wish to sell Gibson to a mid-table Premier League club, a fact which bodes well for Spurs.

Lilywhites manager Mauricio Pochettino has a £50m transfer kitty to reinvest back into his side following the record-breaking sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, and Gibson could fit the bill.

With fellow defender Kevin Wimmer also set to depart from North London, defensive competition is required at the heart of the Spurs defence.
