Tottenham Hotspur have stolen a march on Premier League rivals Newcastle United in the race to sign Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, according to reports.

The 26-year-old has long been linked with a move to England’s top-flight, but only now do Spurs look like meeting the star’s valuation.

Besiktas value the German-born Turkish international at around £18m.

And while that may have put off Newcastle, the Lilywhites appear primed for a bid in the January window.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is still a little light in the forward department and could be tempted to splash the cash on a genuine goalscorer.

Tosun has netted 34 goals in his last 52 games for Besiktas, including 10 strikes in just 14 appearances so far this season.

He’s a big-game performer and crucially has Champions League experience.

In-fact he bagged four strikes in last season’s competition as the Black Eagles narrowly missed out on qualifying for the knockout rounds.

If a deal can be struck, the sweetener for Spurs is that Besiktas have a replacement waiting in the wings.

Former West Ham United man Demba Ba is reportedly on the radar of boss Senol Gunes should Tosun depart for North London.

With the building blocks in place, now it just looks down to Daniel Levy and co to broker the deal.
