The League Two lowdown: Promotion, play-offs and relegation

We’re into the final weeks of the League Two campaign, and everything’s shaping up for a thrilling finale.

Nobody is yet guaranteed of a promotion place, whilst at the other end, at least six sides could realistically face the dreaded drop into Non-League.

Ahead of the ensuing ‘squeaky bum time’, we’re taking a look at the major talking points…

Promotion

It would take an almighty collapse to prevent Accrington Stanley from promotion. Two wins from their final six games would confirm the Lancashire club’s unlikely rise to League One.

Second-placed Luton Town are also in a strong position, and should chalk up an automatic promotion. The most dramatic battle looks to be for the third and final spot – with Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter City the sides in contention.

The Chairboys are 2/9 for promotion, but the 13/8 Grecians now sit just two points behind them with five games remaining.

Wycombe have won one of their last three games, and another slip-up could prove fatal for their promotion hopes.

Play-offs

The top four are confirmed or all-but-confirmed of at least a play-off spot. But below that, there’s a battle.

Notts County and Lincoln City sit fifth and six and have a little wiggle room above the chasing pack. However, Coventry City are hanging onto the final play-off spot by a thread.

The Sky Blues have taken a single point from their last three games, and face the attentions of Mansfield Town, and a Swindon Town side who are unbeaten in four.

Relegation

Chesterfield and Barnet are the current bottom two, but there are half-a-dozen sides who will still be harbouring fears of relegation.

The Spireites are currently rock-bottom. But they’re just four points off 22^nd-placed Forest Green Rovers, and have two games in hand on the Gloucester club.

Grimsby Town, Morecambe and Port Vale are also just about within catching distance for Chesterfield.

However, Barnet – who’ve played 42 games to the Derbyshire club’s 40 – sit just a point above them. If they can pull themselves to safety, it truly will be a great escape.
