Do Crystal Palace face a battle to keep hold of Zaha?

Published:

There’s a strong argument that Crystal Palace would have gone done last season without Wilfried Zaha.

Palace didn’t pick up a single point in any of the nine Premier League games he missed.

Zaha’s skill, speed and spirit were integral to their survival. Without him, there was almost no attacking spark in the side.

And his impressive displays haven’t gone unnoticed.

Borussia Dortmund reportedly see him as a potential replacement for Andriy Yarmolenko, while Tottenham Hotspur and Everton have also been linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international. Spurs are 9/4 favourites to seal his signature.

Zaha is adored by the Palace support and has come through the ranks at Selhurst Park. But that doesn’t guarantee he’ll want to stay at the club this summer.

He’s believed to have turned down Palace’s offer of a new contract that would have made him the highest earner at the club.

Having failed to make the grade at Manchester United, he may still want to prove himself at a higher level.

Even if Zaha does go for a huge fee, he’ll be very hard to replace. Who’s out there at Zaha’s level and willing to join Palace ahead of a bigger side? Any arrival wouldn’t share his attachment for the club either.

That’s why the Eagles will do all they can to keep hold of him. They could be in for a tough season ahead otherwise.
