Republic of Ireland v Wales Tips: Giggs and co. to edge crunch clash?

Ryan Giggs

The Nations League really hots up this evening, with promotion and relegation possibilities riding on Republic of Ireland’s clash with Wales.

Victory for the hosts will leapfrog them above league leaders Denmark and give Ireland a mountain to climb in their pursuit of Group B4 survival.

The Irish need to avoid defeat to have any chance of topping the group going into next month’s final round of Nations League fixtures.

Match Odds

Wales brushed Martin O’Neill’s men aside with a comprehensive 4-1 victory at the Cardiff City Stadium last month.

Our traders don’t think it’ll be quite as easy for the Red Dragons this time around without Gareth Bale or Aaron Ramsey.

They’re out at 13/5 against an Ireland side at 13/10 which has won just three of their last nine home matches. You can back the draw at 19/10.

Talking Tactics

While Ireland may still have control over their own destiny, they don’t usually tend to control much of the play.

The Irish have averaged less than 40% possession in five of their last six matches.

That’s unlikely to change this evening, with a midfield two of Andy King and Joe Allen likely to dominate the ball for Wales.

A young Welsh side has exciting talent running throughout, even in the absence of Real Madrid ace Bale.

They’ll be looking to get David Brooks and the exciting Tom Lawrence on the ball to feed Sam Vokes, who scored against Spain last week.

 Goalscorer Odds

After netting five days ago in a friendly, Vokes shares favouritism with Shane Long to Score Anytime at 12/5. The latter of the pair has bagged once in his last 19 international matches.

Exciting youngster Brooks is chalked up at 5/1 after his excellent start to the season with AFC Bournemouth, while tricky Irish winger Jeff Hendrick can be backed at 4/1.

No Goalscorer at all is the second-most likely outcome in the First/Last Goalscorer market at 4/1.
