PL Darts tips: Wins for Wright, Wade and Van Gerwen?

Premier League Darts preview and oddsfter a ripper of an opening night in Newcastle, the 2019 Premier League Darts campaign hops across to Glasgow for week two.

Reigning BDO and newly qualified PDC entrant Glen Durrant is the guest star this week, following Chris Dobey’s appearance in the North East.

Tournament favourite Michael van Gerwen began his campaign with a 7-5 win over Michael Smith last time out, and the Dutchman is looking to go two wins from two against Mensur Suljovic.

That’s the evening’s final clash, and we’ve previewed that one and everything before as Glasgow gets ready to rumble…

Peter Wright to beat Michael Smith

The night begins with two players looking to collect their first win of the campaign. Smith went down 7-5 to MvG in Newcastle, while Wright went toe-to-toe with Rob Cross in a 6-6 draw.

This should be a cracking opener. Wright threw a 101-average with a 54% checkout against Cross, while Smith knows he’s better than the 95-average he threw versus Van Gerwen.

We’re sticking our neck out a bit, and siding with Snakebite continuing to rediscover his 2017-form at 13/8. He’s the slight outsider for this one, with Smith at 6/5 and the draw chalked up at 3s.

The treble-20 could be in for a brutal opening too. There’s 5/6 about over 6.5 180s between the pair, with 10/11 on 120.5+ checkout.

James Wade to beat Rob Cross

The Machine has been well and truly rebooted in 2019. James Wade was the star of week one, posting a 7-4 win over Raymond van Barneveld with the week’s second-highest checkout and the joint-highest checkout percentage.

It was a solid and accurate performance from the Aldershot arrowsmith, and his confidence should be flying high for a second win on the bounce against Rob Cross.

Voltage is the favourite for this at 11/10, but the 2018 World Champion has yet to find his groove in the Premier League, in this his second campaign.

If Wade is happy with his game – and he looked like he was last week – then we’re siding with the 35-year-old at 9/5.

Cross’s high-scoring should keep him in the hunt though, with 11/1 about Wade taking this 7-4. Cross is 4/5 to land the most 180s.

Gerwyn Price to beat Raymond van Barneveld

You couldn’t pair two more contrasting approaches to the oche than Gerwyn Price and Raymond van Barneveld.

Barney is in his PDC swansong, while Price is desperate to become a main player on the big stage. The Welshman was excellent last week in a 7-4 win over Daryl Gurney too and is the 11/10 favourite to beat the Dutchman.

You can’t keep a good Barney down, though. The two-time world champion is 9/5 to collect his first win of the tournament, with a draw at 3/1.

If Price plays like he did last week – banging in a 104-average – then he should wrap this one up. But he can be his own worst enemy, and that could be ideal for the calm and collected Barney.  Price is 15/2 to take this 7-4, with 5/1 about a 7-5 success.

Daryl Gurney v Glen Durrant – Draw

Plenty of PDC eyes will be on this one, as Glen Durrant makes a sooner-than-expected Premier League bow.

The Yorkshireman has dominated the BDO-scene in recent years, and it was only time before he made the switch.

He’ll fancy his chances against Darryl Gurney. Our traders can’t split the duo, with odds of 7/5 apiece for the win.

So it’s the draw for us at 3/1. Durrant will be out to impress, while Gurney will have to improve on last week’s loss to Price. Superchin was the only player not to throw a 180 in Newcastle.

Michael van Gerwen to beat Mensur Suljovic

With Phil Taylor retired and Gary Anderson injured, there’s a real window for Michael van Gerwen to enter new levels of PDC dominance.

Mighty Mike looked like he had something in reserve against Smith last week, so it remains to be seen whether he lays it all out for week two against Mensur Suljovic.

We aren’t going to argue with MvG’s match odds of 1/3. He’s won 10 of his last 12 versus the Austrian, too.

The Gentle produced an excellent fightback to come from 6-1 down to draw 6-6 with Chris Dobey last week, but such a start against Mighty Mike simply won’t do.

Suljovic is 5/1 to win this, with a draw available at the same price. But there’s 11/8 about MvG to be King of the Oche, while he’s 8/15 to land the most 180s.
