Virgil van Dijk odds-on to win 2019 PFA Player of the Year award

John Terry was the last defender to win the PFA Player of the Year award back in 2005. That could be about to change with Virgil van Dijk heavily odds-on to win the 2019 edition.

Liverpool’s captain fantastic has been immense at the heart of the division’s best defence, which has conceded just 18 goals in 31 matches this season.

His £70m capture from Southampton has catapulted Jurgen Klopp’s men into title contention and seen Van Dijk recognised as a 2/5 shot to be named Player of the Year.

That puts the Dutchman streets ahead of nearest challenger Sergio Aguero, who is 6/1. Raheem Sterling comes next at 8s, before a jump to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah at 20/1 apiece.

It’s taken something special for a forward to get past Van Dijk this season. It looks like being a similar scenario where the PFA Player of the Year award is concerned too.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Aguero looks like he’ll have the last laugh in the Premier League title race, but Van Dijk is running away with things in the Player of the Year betting.”
