Scottish Grand National Tips: Our three lively longshots at Ayr

| 12.04.2019

Move over Aintree! It’s all about the Scottish Grand National this Saturday. Tiger Roll may have been the heavy favourite in Liverpool but there’s no obvious pick over 4m at Ayr. Luckily we’re on hand to help you out.

The likes of Beware The Bear, Big River, Dingo Dollar and Vintage Clouds will all be popular selections at the top of the market. But what about those slightly further down the betting?

Four of the last five winners have gone off at odds of 14/1 or greater after all. So here are our three lively longshots for the 2019 Scottish Grand National.

Crosshue Boy

There’s been plenty of support for Crosshue Boy. It’s not hard to see why. Sean Thomas Doyle’s charge has been aimed at this race ever since his impressive win over 3m at Ayr this time last year.

The nine-year-old had market principal Dingo Dollar behind him that day. And his claims are further boosted by two positive spins over Wexford to get him prepared for the Scottish National.

His 10th in the Becher at Aintree in December also looks rock-solid after winner Walk In The Mill went onto finish fourth in the National last Saturday.

The trainer has been talking up his chances. And with his showing at Ayr 12 months ago suggesting he should be able to stay even further there’s every reason to be confident.

Backing Cogry is a matter of one simple question. Which one will turn up? The one who finished a neck second behind Vicente in 2017? Or the one who was pulled up in the 2018 renewal?

We’re hoping it’s the former. His form at least points to a positive run. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge has been in decent nick this term with a win and a runner-up berth from four starts.

Another positive is that he has tended to do his best work off the back of a break in recent times. And with a 91-day breather between his last run at Warwick and this spin at Ayr, he gets that here.

Carole’s Destrier

Neil Mulholland has three darts in the Scottish National. While Doing Fine and Impulsive Star fail to make it onto our shortlist, the latter should give a strong showing under Sam Waley-Cohen.

But it’s Carole’s Destrier who piques our interest. The veteran is available at a nice double-figure price and is only 6lb worse off from an impressive win in a veterans’ chase at Newbury last month.

He still looks well in off that mark, especially with the likes of Houblon Des Obeaux, Milansbar and 2018 Scottish National winner Joe Farrell in behind that day.

This is more competitive. But there’s every reason to think the 10-year-old, who is a proven stayer over 3m+, can lay down a serious challenge over the 4m distance.
