City signings fail to ignite in frustrating draw with Spurs
Published:Manchester City’s new recruits endured a frustrating introduction to the Premier League as they fought out a 0-0 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
The much-vaunted City have now drifted from 5/1 to 6/1 to win the Premier League title.
Spurs were the side who looked likeliest to break the deadlock, but they could not find a way past City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who was in magnificent form.
Hart produced a first-half goalkeeping masterclass, thwarting attempts from Benoit Essou-Ekotto and two from Jermain Defoe.
And the England international also denied a goal for Tottenham’s outstanding player of the tie, Gareth Bale, who also saw his fizzing left-foot drive hit the foot of the post.
Although Bale continued to torment City right-back Micah Richards, the second half failed to produce as many chances, as the visitors began to retain possession and frustrate their opponents.
Such a lively performance will have encouraged Harry Redknapp, as he and his squad prepare to challenge for the Champions League as well as a top four place in the Premier League.
Roberto Mancini may not be quite so content with City’s disjointed showing, however, as his summer signings had a quiet afternoon.
David Silva showed some neat touches in midfield, but left-back Aleksandar Kolarov was taken off at half-time after an underwhelming debut.
