Dan Skelton expects Flegmatik to run ‘very well’ at Kempton

Ladbrokes ambassador and leading trainer Dan Skelton gives us the lowdown on his eight runners at Kempton, Chepstow and Fontwell this weekend.

Jay Jay Reilly – 2.25 Kempton

Jay Jay Reilly won around the track last time. It’s a little step up in trip by two furlongs, which is a positive and I think he has a chance. He was a bit of a surprise result the other day because he made a mistake two out and I was amazed he got back up.

Flegmatik – 3.00 Kempton

I have had the Coral Trophy in mind for him all year. I was underwhelmed with his most recent run but it was at a time when a few of ours weren’t performing at their best. He won on the card last year over two-and-a-half-miles. I think this is a good race for him. He has no weight and I would like to think he will run very well.

Don Hollow – 4.10 Kempton

Don Hollow takes a step up in grade and runs in a handicap here. It will be a different kettle of fish to running around in a novice. He is ready for a step up like this though and is in good form at home and this will tell us more about where we go next. I think he should be a progressive horse.

Go Steady – 4.45 Kempton

He just found one too good last time. He has been very consistent and there is no reason why he won’t be again. However, he’s not exactly screaming that he’s well handicapped.

Thorpeness – 5.20 Kempton

He is a full brother to Hatcher, a horse who I think has won 14 races for us. This horse is at a different time of his career, just starting out obviously. I think he will run well on decent ground but he doesn’t have to win for us to think he can have a career.

Hometown Hero – 2.32 Chepstow

Hometown Hero keeps being the bridesmaid but hopefully he can get his head in front at some point and Chepstow should be a good track for him. I think he has a chance.

Home Free – 4.52 Chepstow

This is a good bumper and there are lots of pretty promising horses in here. I would have to give him a chance though. He had a good first run, he has improved and should go close here. I haven’t put too much pressure on our bumper horses but I think this horse has stepped forward at home.

Sunday

Proschema – 2.30 Fontwell

Proschema is our only runner on Sunday in the National Spirit Hurdle. The race is worth a few quid and we thought we would give it a go although I think he might improve a little for it. We are taking this race in en route to Aintree and because of the weather he is ready a bit earlier than we expected.
