Euro 2022: Preview, odds and England Women v Sweden Women betting tips

England are in the last four of a major tournament for the fourth successive time and face Sweden on Tuesday for a place in the Euro 2022 final looking to win their first piece of silverware.

The Lionesses fought back from a goal down to post a 2-1 extra-time victory over Spain in the quarter-finals and are 4/5 favourites to win inside 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.

It promises to be a great atmosphere in Sheffield as we look at some of the main talking points and odds in our England Women v Sweden Women betting tips.

England Women v Sweden Women form

The Lionesses remain unbeaten under Sarina Wiegman, a run of 18 games during which they won 16 times and scored 100 goals, so their form could not be much better.

However, they were six minutes away from being eliminated by Spain but Ella Toone volleyed in a header from Alessia Russo to take the game into extra time when Georgia Stanway fired in a thunderous winner to seal a place in the semis.

Spain were much the better team in the first half though as England struggled to handle their opponents’ possession-based game and high pressing which resulted in long hopeful balls into Spain’s half.

That will have given encouragement to the Swedes, the world’s second-ranked team who scored in the second minute of stoppage time to beat Belgium to seal their place in the semis.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side started with a 1-1 draw against holders Netherlands which they followed with 2-1 and 5-0 victories over Switzerland and Portugal to finish top of the group, but completely dominated their narrow win against Belgium, taking an incredible 33 shots, nine of which were on target until Linda Sembrandt struck from a corner at the death.

The Swedes won the inaugural European Championship in 1984 and are 18/5 to beat the Lionesses, a price that certainly looks tempting bearing in mind their only defeat in more than two years came in a penalty shoot-out against Canada in the Olympic final.

The draw looks a possibility at 23/10, but for the first of our England Women v Sweden Women betting tips, we’ll go with the underdogs to win or draw at 10/11 in the double chance market.

England Women v Sweden Women head to head

The Lionesses do not have a great record against the Swedes, winning just one of their seven competitive matches and that came in the second leg of the 1984 final.

In their last meeting, Sweden took third place at the 2019 World Cup with a 2-1 victory and two years earlier shared a goalless draw in a friendly, so England have a big hurdle to overcome if they are to reach Sunday’s final at Wembley.

Kosovare Asllani scored the opening goal when Sweden beat England three years ago and the AC Milan striker has been their best player at the tournament.

For those looking at bigger prices, Asllani can be backed at 50/1 to score the opening goal in a Sweden win.

There have been very few goals in the quarter-finals and all but one match was goalless at the break, so that outcome certainly catches the eye at 13/10, while Draw HT/Draw FT would not be a shock at 17/5 as the next in our England Women v Sweden Women betting tips.

England are 9/1 to win in extra time again, while Sweden are 20/1, with both teams priced at 11/1 to win on penalties.

England Women v Sweden Women team news

Wiegman has picked the same starting XI for all four matches and unless there are any injuries, the England coach is likely to do the same again despite Toone and Russo making such an impact at the Amex Stadium.

That would mean Ellen White starting as the lone striker once more in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Lauren Hemp and Beth Mead playing either side of Fran Kirby as attacking midfielders, with Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway pulling the strings in front of a defence comprising Mille Bright, Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze and Rachel Daly.

That said, Daly had a rough time at left-back against Spain and could be replaced by Alex Greenwood.

Walsh came off with cramp in the closing stages against Spain, but should be fit to face the Swedes.

Sweden head coach Gerhardsson swaps between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 formations, but Stina Blackstenius is almost certain to lead the line, supported by the likes of Fridolina Rolfo and Asllani.

Goalscorer odds

Mead is the top scorer in the competition with five, including a hat-trick in an 8-0 victory over Norway, and is 5/1 to break the deadlock or 21/10 to find the net any time, while White is 4/1 and 17/10.

Stanway proved she has an eye for goal with her howitzer against the Spaniards and is 7/1 and 3/1 in the two markets, with Kirby 15/2 and 16/5 in our England Women v Sweden Women betting tips.

Blackstenius is the 15/2 favourite from the Swedish contingent to get the ball rolling or 16/5 just to score, but Asllani looks interesting at 11/1 and 9/2 in both options.

Filippa Angeldahl is Sweden’s top scorer at Euro 2022 with two and is 16/1 to bag the opening goal of the game or 13/2 to breach the Lionesses’ defence.
