Euro 2020 Group E odds: Spain head field for knockout stage
Published:The European Championship is under way a year later than scheduled as 24 teams begin their quest to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy and we’re taking a look at all six groups.
Spain are 8/1 to repeat their European triumphs from 2008 and 2012 but first they must negotiate a group comprising Sweden, Poland and Slovakia.
Let’s take a snap shot of all four teams and their Euro 2020 Group E odds.
Spain
Coach: Luis Enrique
Key player: Ferran Torres
Enrique is attempting to win the European Championship without any Real Madrid players for the first time in the nation’s history and his cause has not been helped by a Covid outbreak within the camp which saw Sergio Busquets and Diego Llorente test positive.
Los Rojos cruised through qualifying unbeaten with eight wins and two draws, taking four points off Group C rivals Sweden along the way.
Spain smashed Germany 6-0 en route to booking their place at the Nations League finals and despite a 1-1 draw with Greece in World Cup qualifying, they bounced back with wins against Georgia and Kosovo.
Poland
Coach: Paulo Sousa
Key player: Robert Lewandowski
Poland cruised through qualifying with eight wins from 10 games, losing just once to Slovenia, and they are 66/1 to win the European Championship.
The Poles reached the quarter-finals five years ago when they were knocked out in a penalty shoot-out by eventual champions Portugal and they avoided relegation from the top tier of the Nations League last year, although they took just one point from their four matches against Italy and Netherlands.
Sousa’s troops have made a lacklustre start to World Cup qualifying, drawing 3-3 in Hungary and losing 2-1 against England at Wembley, with their only victory coming against minnows Andorra, so improvement is required if they are to reach the knockout stage for a second time.
Sweden
Coach: Janne Andersson
Key player: Alexander Isak
The Swedes, 80/1 to win Euro 2020, are appearing at the tournament for the sixth successive time although they have failed to get out of the group stage in their last three editions.
The 2018 World Cup quarter-finalists finished five points adrift of group winners Spain in qualifying for the finals but they were relegated from the top table of the Nations League with five defeats from six games.
They have made a perfect start to World Cup qualifying, though, with wins against Kosovo and Estonia, but they are likely to be involved in a battle with Poland for that crucial second spot.
Slovakia
Coach: Stefan Tarkovic
Key player: Marek Hamsik
Slovakia squeezed into the finals via the play-offs which saw them beat Republic of Ireland in a penalty shoot-out before overcoming Northern Ireland with an extra-time victory.
The Slovaks reached the last 16 on their European Championship debut five years ago when they finished third in a group containing England and Wales.
However, they were relegated to League C of the Nations League in November and they have made a mixed start to World Cup qualifying, drawing with Cyprus and Malta which they followed with a 2-1 victory over Russia.
