Manchester City history

The club was formed in 1880 as St Mark’s (West Gorton) and was renamed Ardwick Association Football Club seven years later before settling on Manchester City in 1894.

Maine Road was their ground from 1923 but City moved into their new Etihad Stadium home in 2003 where they have enjoyed great success.

City have won the top-flight title eight times, six of which have come in the last 11 seasons, and the FA Cup on six occasions. Additionally, only Liverpool have won the League Cup more times than City’s eight.

Their sole European success came in 1970 when they won the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup against Polish side Górnik Zabrze, Franny Lee scoring what turned out to be the winner from the spot in a 2-1 victory.

Aside from their unbridled success under their Abu Dhabi owners, City twice finished a point behind the league champions in the 1970s when they won the League Cup on two occasions.

However, the club declined in the 1980s onwards and they hit the lowest point in their history on May 3, 1998 when they were relegated to the third tier for the first time.

Joe Royle steered the club to back-to-back promotions, first via a play-off win against Gillingham and then finishing runners-up to Charlton in Division One.

Although they were immediately relegated, Kevin Keegan led City back to the Premier League in the 2001-02 season and they have been there ever since.
