French ace on Norwich radar to bolster midfield

Published:

Norwich appear to have shut the door on Wes Hoolahan’s desired move to Aston Villa but should the midfielder push through a move, Chris Hughton is expected to raid old club Newcastle for a replacement.

Hoolahan appeared to have reached the point of no return after a foul-mouthed rant about the club but the Canaries are unwilling to see him depart for Villa Park.

However, given the nature of the Irishman’s outburst, Hughton will secretly be keen to offload the 31-year-old to rid his squad of negativity ahead of a push for Premier League survival.

Should Hoolahan get his wish, Hughton will use the funds to launch a last ditch bid to sign Newcastle outcast Gabriel Obertan.

The Frenchman, who started his Premier League career with Manchester United, has played just 33 minutes of Premier League football for the Magpies this season and will be keen to show he can cut it at the top level.

While the former Lorient and Bordeaux man has struggled to set the Premier League alight a quick look at his show reel on YouTube proves he has the ability to provide a creative spark for Hughton’s ailing Canaries.

The 24-year-old featured 25 times for Newcastle under Hughton but has managed a total of just 17 Premier League outings since and Hughton will be confident of striking a deal despite the St James’ Park outfit’s need to replace Yohan Cabaye.

Despite Cabaye’s departure to PSG, Obertan looks unlikely to feature in Alan Pardew’s plans anytime soon so a move to Carrow Road would prove relatively straightforward.

Norwich are 21/10 to win their relegation six-pointer at home to Cardiff and whether Hoolahan or Obertan will line-up will be decided before the end of the day.
