Gillingham v Wycombe: Chairboys can pinch unlikely win

Gillingham’s under-par home form has seen them ousted from the League Two top spot, but if the presence of the television cameras can inspire a win over Wycombe – which is priced up at 4/7 – the Gills will return to the summit by the close of play.

A win over Northampton in midweek was their first in front of their own fans since mid-November; a barren spell that stretched for five games and included three defeats.

This should lift spirits in the Wanderers camp as they bid to avenge the 1-0 defeat Gillingham inflicted on them at Adams Park in the early exchanges of the campaign. A loss will have upset the applecart somewhat as Wycombe fans had grown accustomed to wins over Martin Allen’s men; they’d picked up three in a row prior to this defeat which adds to the appeal in their 5/1 for the win.

These three triumphs over Gillingham were made all the sweeter by the fact that the Chairboys didn’t concede a goal and three of their previous four wins this term have also been of this ilk. They’re a massive 8/1 to produce another win to nil when the sides lock horns again, while just a Wycombe clean sheet pays well too at 5/1.

The reason for this being that only one of the Gills’ previous 12 League Two clashes have ended with them failing to find the back of the net, so maybe backing over 2.5 goals here is the way to go.

It pays pretty conservatively at 4/6, but four of the hosts’ last seven at home have surpassed this mark, as have two of Wycombe’s last three away days.

A good punt in the player markets is for the visitors’ Matt McClure to open the scoring.
